Choosing the Right Tree

It’s important to choose the right tree for a specific terrain in order for it grow and to flourish as opposed to having your investment of time, money and energy simply wither away. And with so many choices out there, selecting the appropriate tree can be a challenge. Here are some helpful pointers in choosing the right tree for your landscape.

  • Go Native
While it may be tempting to opt for an exotic tree that hails from a distant shore, choosing a native species is often times much more prudent. Native species are better equipped to thrive in the environment they come from, and require less maintenance. Plus, the environment is more comfortable with trees which are native to it, providing habitat and food for all the types of wildlife.

  • Location, Location, Location
It’s important to choose the right tree for the terrain in which it will live. Is your soil moist or dry? Is your area sunny or shady? Choose a tree that is suitable for its location.

  • Room to Grow
Consider your tree not only as a sapling, but as it will be in 10 or 20 years time. Allow the tree space to grow into maturity. This can mean planting it far enough for your home and power lines that it won’t become a problem later on.

  • Low-Maintenance
Find out whether the tree you are considering requires much maintenance. Something that requires less work from you is obviously preferred.
